Health Occupations Exploring Medical Careers Grades: 11, 12 Prerequisites: Recommended but not required: Health Occupations, CNA Credits: 2 1/2 Credits Description: The Health Occupations - Exploring Medical Careers class is designed for students who are interested in exploring health related career opportunities. Students learn a variety of medical terms, techniques and procedures while visiting various health care facilities for a first-hand view of careers. First semester concentrates on exploring areeas of interest such as: physical therapist, physician, registered nurse, radiologic technologist, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, electrocardiogram technician, and over 200 more careers! Second semester allows students an intership experience which allows the student to choose careers of interest and do an in-depth study of the profession in various health care facilities. Special Requirements: This program is located at an off-campus site and students must provide their own transportation. |

| Teacher Biography
Teaching Philosophy "Students learn best by example. Hands-on learning opportunities provide optimal retention and learning. I encourage students to share their thoughts, beliefs, and opinions to better enable them to care for a diverse patient population in the clinical setting. This also helps them to better understand the multicultural diversity of healthcare in the world." Education
Experience Prior to teaching, Mrs. Alterie worked as a registered nurse in the acute health care setting. Her area of expertise was in cardiac care and medical-surgical nursing. Mrs. Alteries has been with Fox Valley Career Center since 1993. Responsibilities Mrs. Alterie prepares students to function independently in the role of Nursing Assistant in a healthcare facility. She introduces students to the healthcare field by offering internship opportunities while preparing students to provide basic hands-on healthcare skills.
