PC Repair & Maintenance/Networking

Grades: 11, 12

Prerequisites: None although a Keyboarding or Applications of Technology class is recommended.

Credits: 2 1/2 Credits

Description: Students in this class will learn the basic concepts related to computer maintenance and repair, computer upgrading, software installation, and networking. Students are provided with the materials necessary to prepare for the A+ Certification exam and may be prepared to sit for the exam upon completion of this course. Career research, resume building, and professional development topics are explored. Guest speakers and field trips supplement classroom studies.

Students are expected to help with special projects relating to both PC maintenance and repair as well as networking.

Students who complete this class with a grade of "B" or better can receive credit for various Waubonsee Community College courses. Major topics to be covered include:

  • How software and hardware work together
  • The systemboard
  • Floppy drives
  • Hard drive installation and support
  • Understanding and managing memory
  • Electricity and power supplies
  • Multimedia
  • Troubleshooting fundamentals
  • Buy or build?
  • Supporting the latest operating systems
  • Network topologies and concepts

Experience

Ms. Schwein began teaching at Fox Valley Career Center in 2002. Prior to Fox Valley, Ms. Schwein taught for various colleges and universities including New York University, McHenry County College, Elgin Community College, and Waubonsee Community College where she developed 10 new course offerings and 4 new certificates of achievement. Additionally, Ms. Schwein has worked as a instructional design consultant for eHigherEducation, a subsidiary of Eastern Michigan University.

In addition to her teaching experience, Ms. Schwein has diverse practical work experience.

Responsibilities

Ms. Schwein works with students to help them acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the field of Information Technology. She helps students understand the importance of quality customer service while helping them to grow in all areas of professional development. Ms. Schwein encourages students to consider their personal and professional goals and reminds them to work each day toward achieving those goals. She provides a realistic look at opportunities available after high school and promotes the concept of continuing education either in the form of apprenticeship programs, community colleges, or technical schools.

Ms. Schwein serves as Faculty Advisor for the Fox Valley Chapter of SkillsUSA.
